LONDON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–RapidSwitch, part of UK cloud computing company iomart Group plc (AIM:IOM), is providing dedicated hosting for a new B2B online marketplace which is changing the face of the global trade in recyclable materials.

“Our members want reassurance that our site is stable and secure. A key component of this is crucially linked to the service and performance of our hosting company.”

Recycling.com is unique because it allows an auction to take place directly between the seller of recyclable materials – such as paper, plastics, and metals – and those wanting to buy it, in a secure trustworthy online environment. Since launching six months ago over 150 companies have registered in over 17 different countries and turnover of existing members is in excess of $12 billion.

Mark Baij, CEO of Recycling.com, said: “Since launching we’ve had a tremendous amount of interest, and with a multilingual website and team we can communicate very effectively with all the main markets worldwide. Trading started recently and we continue to add new members on a daily basis so we’re pleased that the demand we felt was there based on our research and knowledge of the market is materialising.”

The data for the Recycling.com transactions is stored and transmitted securely from a UK-based dedicated server at RapidSwitch’s 1300 metre² Maidenhead data centre which sits behind a Cisco ASA security appliance to give complete control over access to the platform.

Noel Hanrahan, COO of Recycling.com, explained: “Our members want reassurance that our site is stable and secure. A key component of this is crucially linked to the service and performance of our hosting company.”

RapidSwitch’s ISO27001 and 9001 accredited data centre facilities offer complete peace of mind over the physical security of the platform, complementing the electronic security put in place by Recycling.com.

Neil Christie, Commercial Director of RapidSwitch, said: “We are delighted to be providing reliable and secure hosting for Recycling.com as it establishes a brand new marketplace for recyclables.”

Mark asks…

Where to apply for a small business grant?

needing info. on how and where to apply for a small business grant to cover startup costs.

Pauline Lyons answers:

It is hard to find grants to start a business. Unlike the myths that some perpetuate, federal government and even private foundations hardly give grant money for starting a for-profit business.

One possible exception is for companies developing or exporting agricultural goods, including food and forest product. Another exception could be the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) or Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs http://www.sba.gov/aboutsba/sbaprograms/sbir/index.html , which fund the research and development of technological innovation that meets specific government needs.

Your best bet actually will be from the states if they offer grant programs for women (or any other special interest groups — minorities, women, disabled, veterans, etc). Or check with non profit organizations, particularly women organizations if they offer grants. Examples include

Iowa Women’s Foundation http://www.iawf.org/
New Mexico Women’s Foundation http://www.nmwf.org/guidelines.html

Even SBA does NOT give out grants. From the SBA website http://www.sba.gov/mostrequesteditems/CON_FAQ2.html

“The U.S. Small Business Administration does not offer grants to start or expand small businesses, although it does offer a wide variety of loan programs. (See http://www.sba.gov/financing for more information) While SBA does offer some grant programs, these are generally designed to expand and enhance organizations that provide small business management, technical, or financial assistance. These grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments.”

Nonetheless, you can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov – these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support a for-profit venture.

Here is a listing of federal grants for small businesses. See if there is any available for individuals for starting a business — THERE’S NONE.

Most of the federal grants are given to specific target groups with specific requirements (e.g. Minority business owners involved in transportation related contracts emanating from DOT – Grant#20.905 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Short Term Lending Program

Grants are also often given to non profit groups or organizations involved in training or other similar activities (grant 59.043 Women’s Business Ownership Assistance that are given to those who will create women’s business center that will train women entrepreneurs

Maria asks…

I want to start up my own blog site or what not, but i was wondering if i could get a small business grant?

Can i get a small business grant for startup of this blog site i want?

Pauline Lyons answers:

The tax payers do not give grant money to companies. I am sorry if you thought your tax money was being distributed in that way.

You need a business loan, not a grant.

George asks…

What type of grants and loans are available to start a daycare?

I am interested in opening a daycare. I have a some money saved for startup, but I was informed I will need about 4 times that amount for startup. What are some grants or loans that I can apply for?

Pauline Lyons answers:

Unless you change your business to non profit status, it is near impossible to find grants to start your for-profit daycare business.

Unlike the myths that some perpetuate, federal government and even private foundations hardly give grant money for a for-profit business.

Even SBA does NOT give out grants. From the SBA website http://www.sba.gov/content/facts-about-government-grants

But you can check with your state and local government if they offer a grant for starting a business. Also try Foundation Center http://gtionline.fdncenter.org to see if any private foundations provide grants for starting a daycare business

Loans will also be tough, unless you have the collateral and assets to back up your loan application. The credit crunch has not eased yet and lending to small businesses remain tight.

It is not easy to find grants, and even loans for a daycare business. The best thing to do is to save up more capital for your business

It is difficult to know which Web Host company will be the one you need. I suggest you review several before you decide. At first pick out those with the price range you can afford. You can always change later to a more advanced plan, if necessary. I suggest you check out Host clear: its seems to lower priced and within range of affordability.

Host Clear Web Hosting starts at $3.95 a year. There are three plans: Home, Business and Business Pro plans. The three plans are similar, the basic differences are those between a general web site and those designed for small or regular business purposes.

Three Pricing Plans

A. Home

 a. $3.95 a month

 b. Free domain for life

 c. Unlimited Bandwidth

 d. Unlimited Hosting space

B. Business

 a.$5.95 a month

 b. fast business speed

 c. 2 free domain names

 d. Unlimited Bandwidth

 e. Unlimited Hosting space

 f. Designed for small businesses

C. Business Pro Plans

 b. fastest business plan

 c. three free domain names

Host Clear, as a web site is impressive in that their site is well laid out and easy to read. It is uncluttered and the layout is mostly lists and columns of information. With red highlighted headlined topics and their grayed in check marked features can easily be read without a lot of switching pages. Their whole approach, from a visitor’s point of view is organization and the portrayal of a no nonsense place to do business. It is, in every sense of the word, a clear and well managed web site.

Even this well organized site uses the column approach to all their pages. When they show you how to compare their three sites, they line them up in a column, with a feature on the left and under each headlined plan, Home, Business, and Business Pro, in that order are compared. With one glance prospective customers can glance at the features they need and insist

Sandy asks…

Qualification for small business loan for new business?

Will securing a small business loan for a new business be based on my personal credit? What is the minimum a first time borrower will receive? If I am planning to purchase a house in the next three years and I secure a business loan this year will it affect applying for a home loan in the next three years?

Pauline Lyons answers:

Yes, Depends on your current income and personal credit, Yes.

Right now it’s extremely difficult to get any sort of business loan. I wouldn’t want to put a hard number on it, but I would venture that if your credit score is less than about 750, there’s little to no chance for a business loan. Additionally, you’re going to need something to secure the loan with, probably a house. Loans are very risky for startups, and banks aren’t lending much right now.

Nancy asks…

How can I get a startup loan for a small business with less than perfect credit and little down?

I’m starting a small siding company and need some startup money, but have little down and less than perfect credit. I have 10 years of experience and am tired of making someone else all the money and me nothing to show for my efforts.

Pauline Lyons answers:

The business of lending is a dense one and should be researched properly. To get started, I suggest contacting the Small Business Administration (SBA). Entrepreneur also offers a great site dedicated to money & finance – see below for both.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the process. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* How to Get a Small Business Loan: A Banker Shows You Exactly What to Do to Get a Loan (Small Business Series, No 1) by Bryan E. Milling
* The SBA Loan Book: Get A Small Business Loan–even With Poor Credit, Weak Collateral, And No Experience by Charles H. Green
* The Insider’s Guide to Small Business Loans by Dan M. Koehler

There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

Chris asks…

How do I get a business loan in California?

I am interested in get a small business started, but dont have the funds. I am sure I will make a good profit out od this bsinesss for it is in demand. How do I get the funding to start my project and get it off the ground?

Pauline Lyons answers:

Unfortunately, the reality is that you need money to borrow money. If you don’t have the funds — e.g. No assets, no collateral, no own money to invest in the business — you have ZERO chances of getting a loan.

You are better off

- maximizing your credit cards
- using all your savings including 401K and such
- borrowing money from family and friends
- starting really slow depending on how much resources you have

Getting a business loan is NOT easy – especially with the tough economic climate.

You just don’t go to a bank to ask for a loan with only your business idea. Banks look at other factors not just your credit score when applying for a business loan. Banks want to see:

- demonstrated ability of the business to generate revenues — businesses that are already operating and have at least 2 years’ worth of financial statements that demonstrate strong profitability. Business ideas are just ideas; not proven to generate profits. Banks also do not often lend to startups

- ability to repay the loan through collaterals and assets. They need to see that they can get something back from you in the event that the business goes bust and you cannot repay the loan

- solid management team: they want to know that the business will be run by someone who knows what they are doing

- excellent credit history

- your investment in the business: they want to see that you believe in your business enough to put down your own money into the business

If you have the above, then prepare a business plan. – The business plan is NOT the first thing banks want to see. It’s important, but banks will need to see your ability to repay the loan. Sometimes, they won’t even bother to read your business plan if they know you don’t have any money. If you have to have a business plan, you need a good executive summary (as that is what they’re most likely read, if at all) PLUS solid, realistic financial projections/plans

The huge domain and web hosting service GoDaddy.com was down intermittently for most of the day on Monday. These outages left thousands of web sites offline – not just sites hosted by GoDaddy, but sites that had their domain names registered through GoDaddy as well.

GoDaddy announced today that the outage was not due to a hack, but "a series of internal network events that corrupted router data tables" according to Engadget

Despite the assertion that the outage was a technical problem, a hacker that is apparently affiliated with Anonymous has claimed responsibility for the outage, but GoDaddy has not confirmed the problems are due to hacking activity. The hacker calls himself Anonymous Own3r, and has posted some details to his twitter account @AnonymousOwn3r, including the screenshot below.

CNN reports that most web sites were back online by Monday night. Wired News reports that GoDaddy has moved their DNS operations to Verisign, their biggest competitor, in order to get their customers back online as soon as possible. From the Wired article:

According to Mikko Hypponen, chief research officer with antivirus company F-Secure, the move to VeriSign has a simple explanation: “They are moving to name servers which are not under attack,” he said via direct message.

If the outage was due to a technical glitch, this will be the second time in a week that Anonymous has made false claims. Last week Anonymous claimed to have stolen records from an FBI agent that indicate the FBI was tracking Iphones illegally, only to have a small application development firm in Florida assert those records were stolen from them.

There is a growing trend today of marketing lower priced products specifically aimed at the home based online business owner. While this may seem like a great deal it may very well not be a great deal once we peel the onion, so to speak.

It’s obvious that the current economy is the US, as well as for most of the world, is depressed. Most people are scraping to just get by. The amount of disposable income, the amount that most people would consider available for the purchase of home business related items, is pretty much dried up these days.

The bottom line is the average Jane or Joe doesn’t have the resources to buy $77, $97 or $197 products.

Internet marketers, never at a loss for creativity, have introduced the “bargain basement” concept for product marketing to this ever increasing and enthusiastic market segment. The market is flush with Internet Marketing products, for $10 or less, aimed directly at this lush target market.

So when is a deal not a deal?

Some of these offerings are really low grade as in old worn out PLR articles and eBooks, graphics packages that could actually be found for free and a host of other items collecting dust on many marketers hard drives. The velocity at which these offers come out is close to light speed so you may not even realize that you could end up purchasing 2 or three per week. You may very well end up spending almost the same amount that you did a few years ago.

Some of these offers are reasonable and may make sense because, in the long run, they clearly will save you time, resources and money. The trick is picking the right one. What makes this particularly difficult is the fact that 99% of these so called deals are not refundable. So how can you take advantage of a good deal?

Donna asks…

Where can I get a annual list of the top 20 home businesses?

I’m searching for a real home business with little to no up front investment with proven results and I’m tired of folks hiding behind deception when presenting their business. Wanting to find someone straight-forward and down to earth that has a proven online or home business that works.

Pauline Lyons answers:

It depends on what you want – a home business like freelance writing or daycare or a business opportunity like Amway or Quixtar.

If you are looking for a business opportunity, Entrepreneur Magazine has an annual issue on the top business opportunities. On the Web, you can find their bizopp listings at http://www.entrepreneur.com/bizoppzone/0,4997,,00.html

For ideas on home=based businesses (not bizopps), here are some sources:

Top 10 Home Businesses with Rapid Break-Even Time http://www.powerhomebiz.com/vol33/breakeven.htm
10 Profitable “Go-Out” Home Businesses http://www.powerhomebiz.com/vol31/goout.htm
Low Cost Startup Businesses http://www.entrepreneur.com/lowcostbusinesses/0,6617,,00.html
6 Hottest Businesses on the Web http://www.powerhomebiz.com/052006/web.htm

The best home business that you can be sure is not a scam is one that you start yourself. It will depend on what you want, how you define to be interesting. A person may consider a pet sitting business to be the most exciting work in the world, while another person would rather watch TV than take care of dogs.

The key is to determine what your interests are, what you want to do, what is suitable for your lifestyle and your overall goals, and what can fit with your resources.

Dan Ramsey in his book “101 Best Home Businesses” has a chapter on how to find YOUR best home business. He suggests these 10 steps:

1. List 5 things you do best
2. List how others would benefit from what you do best
3. Find out how to give people what they want
4. Learn the value of your services to others
5. Find out who else offers similar services
6. Learn from the successes of others
7. Learn from the failures of others
8. Plan your own success
9. Make low cost mistakes
10. Enjoy what you do and how you do it

He then made suggestions on the best home businesses according to type. Here are a few of them:

Best Businesses Using Craft or Physical Skills
- antique restoration
- auto detail service
- carpet cleaning business
- errand/delivery service
- housecleaning business

Best Service Businesses
- bed and breakfast operator
- caregiver
- catering service
- senior day care center
- tutoring service

Best Professional Businesses
- desktop publisher
- magazine writer
- import/export service
- income tax preparation service
- event planner

Daniel asks…

how much will it cost to put up a photography business in canada?

We’re planning to migrate in Canada and I would like to put up a photography business there. How much do you think it will cost me to put up a photo studio there including the place license and the signage? I already have the studio equipments ready and high end sony videocam.

Do you think this is a good business there?

Pauline Lyons answers:

Not an easy business to crack. What type of photography business? Is this a private studio, passport photos, do you do wedding photos, do you sell frames/cameras, do you provide digital copies? Which city?

If you are hoping to qualify for permanent residency under the investor class, you need to have a net worth of $1.6 million and you need to prove that you are going to invest $800,000 in a business. That would be a serious photography business in most cities.

Just as a rough estimate in a reasonable sized city…. Say monthly rent $2,000, hydro $400, insurance $250, two employees $5000, advertising $500, web-site $200, credit/debt fees $250, accounting services $250, office supplies $100, banking and fees $100, etc., etc. Say $100,000 a year. Startup costs would probably be something like: web-site $25,000, computers $5,000, computer software $10,000, high end printers $25,000, cameras and equipment $15,000, furniture $10,000, lights $5,000, signs $5000, licenses $500, legal $2500, office supplies $1000, initial inventory (paper, frames, books, covers, etc.) $5,000, etc. Say a $100,000.

So… Maybe $300,000 to get your through the first two years of the business. If you try to skimp — no web-site, no range of services, etc. Then I wouldn’t bother. People won’t find you and more importantly if there is another shop down the street which can provide large prints, 5 minute passport photos, in-stock frames, photo books, etc. Most people will go there.

Otherwise, you might as well just skip the space and limit yourself to just wedding and event photography. Work from home and skip most of the overhead.
